Carlisle, MA Real Estate And Community Resources Guide

The Town of Carlisle sits amidst the forest 20 miles northwest of Boston. Once called “City of the Woods” by Henry David Thoreau, the town atmosphere remains peaceful. There are no shopping malls, fast food joints, or even street lights.

In 1754 the District of Carlisle was formed from a northern section of Concord, but a dispute about the location of the meetinghouse returned the land to Concord two years later. In 1780, parts of Concord, Acton, Chelmsford and Billerica formed a second District of Carlisle. It remained a district until its incorporation as a town in 1805.

Today's Carlisle is run by the Board of Selectmen, which consists of five elected individuals that serve as the Executive Officers of the town. The Concord Public Schools educate children from Kindergarten through eighth grade, at which point they graduate to the Concord-Carlisle Regional High School or the Minuteman Career & Technical High School.

Because over a quarter of the town is conservation land, there are a variety of outdoor activities to enjoy. Forests and old farmland make up much of this land, but open areas provide space for sports such as soccer, baseball, and softball. The town also lays partial claim to the last cranberry bog in use in Middlesex County-the other half of the bog belongs to Chelmsford.

The town allows residents to take advantage of the conservation land with a series of summer programs for kayaking, rock climbing and hiking. Great Brook Farm holds Star Parties once or twice a month during the summer: a free event for the community to gaze at the stars through telescopes.

Every other June, the Carlisle Garden Club organizes a Country Garden Tour, where local residents and nurseries open their yards and gardens to the public. The Club holds a plant sale at the same time, the proceeds of which go towards college scholarships for students from Carlisle. At the Corey Auditorium, the Savoyard Light Opera Company performs works written by W.S. Gilbert, A.S. Sullivan and other playwrights.

Home prices in Carlisle vary, with lower priced single-family homes selling in the $400,000 to $450,000 range between June 2008 and June 2009. Higher priced homes in the same time period started at around $1,000,000. The median price over this span was $730,000.

Located on Routes 225 and 27, Carlisle residents have easy access to Interstates 495 and 95, US Route 3, and Route 2. Sitting 35 minutes from Boston, Carlisle residents live conveniently close to the city and the Logan International Airport.
